Okay, technies; give me what you've got

In a unexpected, overwhelming and bizarre turn of events, on Monday I found myself in possession of a 4th generation iPad of my very own. I've been waffling over whether or not to get some sort of tablet for awhile--it's not anything that I needed or necessarily really wanted, but on the last few holidays I've been on, the folks around me have had them (or laptop equivalents) and the constant exposure to them created more of an interest than I'd previously expressed--but the decision was taken out of my hands and now I have this thing that I don't particularly know what to do with.

So, as always, I turn to you, Trusted Internet (and real life) friends: Do any of you have iPads (or iPhones), and if so, what are you favorite applications (I really really REALLY hate the "word" "apps." I just hate it. Ugh)? What do you use this hardware for? Is there a livejournal application that is worth the money they want for it?

GIVE ME YOUR KNOWLEDGE. Please and thank you. ♥

(I am very excited to try this Face Time thing out, but am skeptical about it's feasibility)

I don't have an iPad, but I have an iPhone. I think all my apps are available for the iPad as well. Sorry I know you hate that word, but its so annoying to write applications all the time.

Oh and FYI I don't really buy any apps, I only dl free ones or wait for them to go on sale for less than $1.

My favorites are:
Instagram (I'm pem81484 if you want to find me)
The Weather Channel (the weather that comes with apple products SUCKS and is pretty much wrong 95% of the time)
Shazam (you hold it up while a song is on and it tells you the song title, artist name and gives a link to buy if you want)
Songza (free radio service with some pretty cool premade playlists based on the artists you like, mood you're in or decade you want to listen to)
Mapmywalk (tracks the distance and pace for you)
P traker lite (keeps track of your cycle and can help you track your moods, symptoms, temperature, weight, etc.)
Apps Gone Free (is updated every day with apps that normally cost money, but are free for a 24 hour period)

These ones are the same as their websites, but more conducive to the ios platform than going to the websites through safari on your device:
Yelp
Moviefone
iMDb
YouTube
Groupon
Buzzfeed
DamnYouAutoCorrect
Pinterest

I have a bunch of games too, but those are different for everyone based on their tastes so let me know if you like playing games on the computer and I can suggest a few based on what you enjoy.

My sister uses FaceTime a lot to speak to my other sister and the kids when they're at home, or we're on separate holidays, so as long as the internet connection is good, it's pretty cool. I don't tend to have a lot of applications on my phone except for the practical ones like What's App, Snapshot can be fun, I have banking ones and Word with Friends (my sis and I have battles).

In addition to pegm81484's awesome staples, I like:

1Password (great way to securely store and retrieve all of your sensitive info)
Dragon Dictation (you talk to it and it will type out what you say for you)
Seafood Watch (IDK if you like sushi, but if you do, it's useful in selecting sustainable items)
Audobon Society Guides and National Geographic National Park Guide (if you hike a lot like I do)
Stillpoint (Kane's meditation app - use headphones with it)
iTunes U (college lectures for staying educated)
Dark Sky (will tell you when the weather changes and warn you of storms so you don't have to check the weather)
Yocto Clock (best alarm clock ever - I prefer it to Apple's Clock app)

My favorite games:

Puzzle Quest 2
Fruit Ninja
Angry Birds (especially Angry Birds Rio)
Oregon Trail

I tend to go to Lifehacker for questions like this, because of their tech knowledge and because they always consider advice of commenters.

Good luck!
